Tokyo government extends support to event venues
2018/04/17
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) aims to support the city’s business events industry by promoting leading areas for events. This was done by launching a website targeted at domestic and overseas organizers, and to showcase the strengths of these areas.
The website highlights MICE hubs in the city and includes visual primers on each alongside information such as number of convention centres, hotel rooms, and banquet halls. A particularly useful feature is the case study section where planners can get ideas and solutions based on past events.
While the website is yet to be comprehensively filled out, the top three business event areas so far point to Marunouchi, Roppongi, and Waterfront.
The website is part of TMG’s Action Plan for 2020 which was initiated in 2016 to realize the city’s goals of becoming “safe”, “diverse”, and “smart”. This includes elevating Tokyo’s status as a global financial city, innovating and supporting SMEs, positioning the city as a prime tourist destination, and improving land, sea, and air transport networks.
Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Olympics, which signals an influx of domestic and international arrivals and a surge in business events during and around the period of the Games.
